After the death of Harwin, Guntrek often would go rangin’ up the Blind River into the Badlands. He said that was the way my mother went and perhaps he could find signs of her. He thought perhaps she would return back to Karak Kadrin after she rid herself of her great shame, that she could pursue death and reclaim her honor with a clearer mind. He had no love for me and spoke his mind, not thinkin’ of how the words affected me. Every time he left I feared he wouldn’t return, that he would leave me alone to live out my days. But he returned every time. Sometimes he had bits o’ news that my mother had left her mark in the Badlands. I don’t know what brought him back, I like to think it was stubborn duty. When Guntrek caught the swamp fever I tended to him until his dyin’ breath. It was a long affair, nearly two weeks he withered away. He didn’t speak much, towards the end he hadn’t the strength. In his final moments he looked at me and for the first time I saw tears streaming down his face. I don’t know if they were tears of regret that his life was wasted in these foetid swamps, or tears of sorrow that he failed in some duty, or tears that asked for forgiveness from me for his harsh nature.

As the hour grew late Ulrek asks you to light a fire so he can finish his tale.
